Dear Solo Attorney,
Running a solo practice is tough.
You are the one:
Searching for clients
Sending invoices
Balancing personal and professional life
Hello lawyer burnout.
After all, you never signed up to be a virtual assistant, bookkeeper, or customer support. Yet, here you are.
Gees…
How are you supposed to keep up with the high-demands?
If you feel like you are one client away from dropping the ball…
This might be the most important letter you read this year.
Take It From Another Solo
Allison L. Wood here, legal ethics coach and former chair of the Illinois disciplinary board. Not too long ago I was where you might be right now. I cared deeply for my clients but had no desire to continue agency work. I needed more time and flexibility so that I could be home with my young child. That’s what motivated me to launch my solo practice.
Fast forward to several years later.
Today, I have systems in place to support me so that I can focus on the practice of law. But I did NOT get here overnight.
Spoiler alert:
Solo Lawyers Are High-Risk
Sad but true.
While working at the agency, I investigated and prosecuted countless professional misconduct cases., I saw case after case first-hand how attorneys get in trouble. One guess what type of attorneys consistently ended up in trouble.
SOLOS
Just look at the Illinois disciplinary statistics.
In 2018 78 lawyers were sanctioned, 47 were solos.
In 2019 96 lawyers were sanctioned. 60 were solos.
Do You See The Pattern?
Clearly there is something solo attorneys are missing.
Most of the time those disciplinary claims came because solo lawyers were not intentional in how they operate their practice or manage the attorney client relationship.
Mistakes were made while being overwhelmed with heavy caseloads and little support. Failure to take time off can cause burn out that leads to poor decision making.
None of the solo attorneys that I have prosecuted or defended before the disciplinary agency ever believed they would be the subject of a disciplinary claim. Sometimes they regretted taking the client that they knew would be difficult.
The claim served as a wake-up call for some clients. It exposed the fact that they’d neglected certain aspects of running their firm.
Moment Of Truth
They learned the hard way that failure to put proper systems in place could indeed cost them their license.
That’s why it’s up to you to get your affairs in order now.
